This semester, we proudly initiated 10 men into our chapter: Daniel Teal, Gregg Coughlin, Jacob Adkins, James Gurnee, Lee Hopper, Michael Lehe, Nate McBride, Nick McIntyre, Robert Hasler, and Thomas Ohlgren.
Our chapter recorded over 800 hours of service from numerous philanthropic events. One of these events, our second annual 3 on 3 basketball tournament, raised $340 for the Hillsdale Alpha Omega Women’s Care Center. Other events and organizations that brothers volunteered for include:

Additionally, brother Patrick Davenport is the head of the Adopt a Grandparent GOAL program and brother Andrew Haines is the head of the Big Brothers Big Sisters GOAL Program. In an effort to reach out to alumni, our chapter hosted an event at a local brewery which kicked off a short term fundraising project to raise money for chapter house renovations. Information on this can be found on our Facebook page. We are proud of brothers Andrew Smith (Above) and Dan Klimas for their Division 3 National Championship in Shotgun that they won in early April. We say goodbye to seniors Joseph Viviano, James Markman, Steve Delie, Jacob Shafer, Dan Pauley, Mike Morrison, Kyle Forti, Max Nichols, Kevin Bishop, Thomas Harner, Elliot Braman,Victor Tenbrink, Christian Mull, David Montgomery, and Daniel Klimas. We were honored to have Joseph Viviano and Kevin Bishop graduate with two of the top ten cumulative grade point averages for their class. They will be sincerely missed here at Alpha Kappa, and we wish them luck in their post graduate endeavors.

Last semester, we picked up 9 pledges, and initiated 4 of them into our brotherhood this January. During one of our most successful Derby Days in recent years, we raised $4300 for the Hillsdale Manor, a local home for underprivileged children. In addition, a large group of us helped them repaint and fix-up numerous rooms in their house which was in desperate need of repair. Other philanthropic events included adopting and maintaining a 3 mile stretch of local highway, participating in an inter-fraternity council sponsored clothing and food drive for the Salvation Army, and providing a family with thanksgiving dinner.
During Fall Break, the majority of the fraternity spent the weekend at Hillsdale’s Rockwell Lake Lodge, in Luther Michigan (as seen above). There we participated in various team building and goal setting exercises that helped us re-focus on how we can make our chapter, our college, and our community a better place.
Christmas, as always, was a very cheerful time at Alpha Kappa. The Christmas Party was a great success, and every room in the house was decorated magnificently. As the semester came to a close, our ambitions became heavily centered on grades. The newly built tables in the Brother’s room allowed for a great study environment, and the company of each other only motivated us further to work hard.
Our goals for the next semester include maintaining our tradition of leadership on campus, reclaim the scholarship cup that has been taken from us for the past several years, find new and innovative philanthropies, and to recruit more outstanding men into our brotherhood.

Today (February 13, 2011) Alpha Kappa had pick-up, and we picked up 7 great guys to pledge our Fraternity. They are (From Left to right): Andrew Haines, Alex Kane, Brad Mitzner, Kirk Fredrickson, James Block, Paul Chirdon, and Tommy Lundberg.
Alpha Kappa once again picked up the second largest number of the Greeks. Also, this is the largest spring pledge class in recent memory. We are looking forward to a great semester!

As the Fall ’10 semester draws to a close, we take a look at a few of the events which took place this semester. Beginning with the Second Annual Golf Outing, we raised money for the “Doc” Scholarship and had a great time doing so. It was certainly an excellent time seeing all the Alumni from the different years competing for a great cause. As the end of September rolled around, Derby Days began in full swing under the excellent leadership of Kevin Bishop ’12. Throughout the week, we competed the different sororities against each other (Chi Omega, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Pi Beta Phi) in a fire department and fire rescue themed events. Through their help, and with the assistance of the local Hillsdale Fire Department, we raised over $3,000.00 to go towards the Hillsdale Fire Department’s Water Rescue Program. Continuing on into November, Homecoming came and with it the 30th Anniversary of our re-founding. Many of the re-founders returned and we enjoyed seeming them here reminiscing about the glory days and swapping stories about our various adventures on and around campus. At Homecoming, Kirk Cordill ’92 received Hillsdale College’s Distinguished Alumni Award. We also had the opportunity to kick-off our Capital Campaign and begin our goal of reaching $300,000.00. Needless to say, it has been an exciting semester made ever better by the nine great men who have pledged the House, and with them in tow we are ever looking forward towards Initiation. As Finals approach and with our minds already drifting off towards Christmas Break, we at the Alpha Kappa Chapter of Sigma Chi would like to wish you Happy Holidays!

As Homecoming Week begins, we have our current Pledges competing in the Spirit Week Challenges.
So far they have put together a Homecoming Banner. As the week progresses they will collect cans for a food drive, compete in a wing eating contest, sing the fight song, and last but certainly not least, dance in a mock rock of their own devising.
So good luck to “THE NASTY N9NE!”
